Enrico Frascione

Established in 1893 by Enrico Frascione, a renowned art collector and dealer, the Frascione collection specialized in European paintings from the 14th to 17th century, with a notable focus on the Renaissance. Now in its fourth generation, the family legacy is led by Federico Gandolfi Vannini.

The gallery has participated in the most prestigious fine art exhibitions in Europe and in the USA, such as Art Miami 2024, TEFAF New York (2018/2019), the Palm Beach Show 2024, Paris Fine Art (2021/2022), FAB Paris (2023/2025 and the Florence Biennale BIAF (2019/2022/2024). Multiple publications and collaborations with art historians underscore the gallery’s commitment to academic contributions (www.frascione.com).

For over a century, Frascione has served an esteemed clientele across Europe, Asia, and the United States, including museums and private collections, solidifying its position as a beacon of artistic excellence.

Enrico Frascione : Giovanni Battista Vanni, David avec la tête de Goliath, Vers 1623

Giovanni Battista VANNI
(1599 Florence – Pistoia 1660)

David with the head of Goliath

circa 1623
Oil on panel
22×18 cm

This is the bozzetto that precedes and invents the painting with the same iconography, preserved in the Museo Civico di Prato, in which Giovanni Battista Vanni demonstrates both his Florentine origin, but also his independence from the many alleged masters that ancient biographies compare him to.

It is curious to note that while in the ‘final’ artwork the author seems to anticipate certain results that will be of Alessandro Rosi (Florence 1627-1697), on the other hand the bozzetto, of swaggering incompleteness, seems more in the line with the Mannerist lesson of Giovanni Bilivert (Florence 1585-1644).

In the small panel the figure of David shows an elegant dance step that will later be lost, just as a rapid, nervous movement present in the first formal idea, will be slowed down in the canvas.
