Galerie Mingei specializes in both ancient and contemporary decorative arts from Japan. Located in the heart of Paris’s Saint-Germain-des-Prés district, the gallery is directed by Philippe Boudin and his daughter, Zoé Niang.

Renowned for its thematic exhibitions and artist monographs, the gallery has established itself as a key reference in its field. As a leading ambassador of Japanese bamboo basketry, Galerie Mingei is the foremost gallery in Europe dedicated to this art form.

It played a major role in promoting this tradition, notably through its active involvement in the landmark exhibition “Fendre l’air. Art of Bamboo in Japan” (27 November 2018 – 7 April 2019) at the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac. The exhibition was a milestone in raising awareness and appreciation of Japanese bamboo art in Europe.

Galerie Mingei : statue de Bishamonten, Japon, XIIIᵉ siècle

Statue of Bishamonten

13th century – Kamakura period (1185–1333)

Carved wood with traces of polychromy
C14 dating: between 1264 and 1296

Bishamonten, also known as Tamonten, is one of the major figures in the Japanese Buddhist pantheon.

He is both guardian of the North, protector of the Dharma (Buddhist teachings), and a deity of war.

This 13th-century wooden sculpture perfectly embodies the expressive and realistic style characteristic of religious art from the Kamakura period.
