This work created in 1934 dates from Fautrier’s figurative period spanning from the 1920s to the early 1930s, during which he addressed four themes: nudes, objects, faces, and landscapes incorporating flowers.
In this watercolor and gouache, Fautrier paints sunflower heads tightly arranged in a bouquet. Depicting them from above and painting them in blue and green makes the subject not necessarily readable at first glance. However, one is immediately struck by the delicacy of the brushwork and the vibrant colors.
This work was acquired from Galerie Argos, an important modern art gallery in Nantes, from Jeanne Charles Bourgeat, a gallery owner and friend of the family.
