The Musée Jacquemart-André honours Jacopo Robusti, known as Tintoretto (1518/19-1594), one of the leading figures of Italian Mannerism, with the first French retrospective devoted to his entire career.
An unprecedented overview
of the Venetian master
Nicknamed “Tintoretto” after his father’s trade as a dyer, Jacopo Robusti stands as one of the major figures of sixteenth-century painting. He spent his entire life in Venice, where he built an exceptionally long career marked by bold compositions, dizzying perspectives, dramatic effects of light and his famously rapid touch, the celebrated prestezza.
The exhibition brings together religious paintings, portraits and mythological scenes, revealing the painter’s humour, sensuality and critical eye.

A legacy that spans the centuries
Beyond this career overview, the exhibition shows how Tintoretto’s art extends across centuries and borders to become a touchstone for nineteenth-century French painting: Ingres, Delacroix, Cézanne and Manet all drew inspiration from his work.
“Timeless Tintoretto” is part of the Musée Jacquemart-André’s ongoing programme of Italian art, in which Venetian painting holds pride of place, following exhibitions devoted to Caravaggio (2018-2019), Botticelli (2021-2022), Giovanni Bellini (2023) and Artemisia Gentileschi (2025).
