On the occasion of Fine Arts Paris 2026, Galerie Alexis Lartigue brings together a selection of major works under the theme of “duality.”
Far from being conceived as an irreconcilable opposition, duality is presented here as an essential condition for balance, creation, and renewal.
The decades following the World Wars witnessed the emergence of new questions concerning the individual, their place in the world, and their relationship with others.
Certainties were shaken, identities fragmented, and artists sought new visual languages capable of expressing a reality that had become increasingly complex.
Between presence and absence, unity and multiplicity, stability and movement, the works presented each explore, in their own way, the tensions that shape the human experience.
This reflection finds a particularly resonant echo in Victor Brauner’s 1959 painting.
Faithful to the symbolic and visionary universe that characterizes his postwar work, Brauner constructs a doubled, almost totemic figure.
The geometric faces and symmetrical forms appear to oscillate between masculine and feminine, conscious and unconscious, individual and alter ego.
An heir to Surrealism yet profoundly marked by the upheavals of the twentieth century, Brauner conceived duality as an inner force—a principle of transformation that enables human beings to reconcile their contradictions rather than deny them.
