Founded in 2008, Galerie Pierre Brost specializes in antique paintings and drawings, with a particular focus on 18th-century French portraits.
For more than fifteen years, the gallery has been quietly and behind the scenes conducting research and rediscovering forgotten or misattributed works, which has enabled it to bring several works back into the spotlight—works that are now recognized by experts and institutions.
Among them are a pastel portrait by François Boucher, another by Jean Valade, an important modello by Baron Gérard, and a preparatory drawing by Nicolas-Bernard Lépicié for his self-portrait presented at the 1777 Salon.
Its work, in conjunction with the gallery’s annual exhibitions, has led to several acquisitions by prestigious institutions and private collections, both in France and abroad.

A leading figure in the field of seascapes – notably for his completion of the prestigious series Vues des ports de mer de France commissioned by the Constituent Assembly – Jean-François Hue had little time to make the most of his talent as a portrait painter.
The very few known examples, however, reveal works of great quality, imbued with personality.
Our portrait, rediscovered today, provides a fresh and eloquent illustration of this.
